High School Biology Department: Open Classes

Recently, the high school biology department held open classes for multiple grades .

On December 3rd, Ms. Tan held an open class on “Human Population Growth” in the recording room of the Zhentao Building. In this class, the ninth graders analyzed a graph showing how the human population size changed over time and discussed what might have contributed to such changes. Then, students learnt how to use age structure graphs to predict the future human population growth pattern by building age structures with dominos.

In Mr. Portillo’s open class on “Protein Translation” on November 27th, the 11th grade A-level students learnt the principle of genetic coding by using online tools to simulate how genetic information stored in DNA is transcribed and translated to protein.

In these two open classes, students understood abstract and complicated concepts through engaging and hands-on class activities with the guidance of their teachers. Students also experienced the fun of learning via participating in these activities.
