Grade 4-5: Reading Month
November is the reading month for fourth and fifth grade. During this month, teachers, students and their parents participated in various reading activities. Reading plays a very important role in the growth of students. In SHSID, reading Chinese can help students lay a solid foundation in language and understanding Chinese culture. Reading English can accelerate the communication between Chinese and Western cultures, and good reading skills can even help students comprehensively understand mathematical questions. In the long run, reading can enrich the student’s spiritual world. Helping students to develop good reading habits now, will benefit them for life.
Before reading month began, members of ASB designed posters for the Reading Month and posted them in the corridor. Each student set his or her own reading goal with the minimum reading time, 150 minutes per week, and they are recorded in the contact book every day. Throughout the reading month, whether it is in P&B or in break time, you could see students reading carefully in the classroom.
The teachers also took action during the reading month. The foreign teachers designed a T-shirt for the fourth and fifth grade teachers. There was a small light bulb on the T-shirt, which means reading can “light up” life. The teachers also participated in the activity “Book Selfie” with the students. Each teacher and student took a self-portrait with a book in various interesting poses.
In addition, many special events were also in full swing during the reading month. In the book recommendation activity, students in the fourth and fifth grades voted for a series of favorite Chinese and English books, and the lists of the books were shown in each class. There was also an exciting storytelling competition. The contestants passed three rounds of competitions and eventually competed in the auditorium for the final champion. For the first time in the fourth grade, a “Family Reading” event was held to invite parents to explore the beauty of reading together with their children. The teachers designed an interesting parent-child reading manual for them. Parents and children were enthusiastically and actively involved. Through reading together, they not only gained knowledge and happiness, but also promoted a reading relationship.
This reading month event has created a strong reading atmosphere in the fourth and fifth grades. Although the reading month is ending, the students’ life with books has just begun. We hope that through this activity, students can enjoy and celebrate a love for reading!
