Primary and Middle School English Department PD Day: Classroom Management

November 14, 2019

On November 9th, the primary school foreign teachers dedicated their day to professional development and preparing for the remaining half of the semester after midterms. One of the most helpful aspects of the day was sharing classroom management and teaching techniques. These are techniques teachers can use in their own classrooms in order to create a productive learning environment.

There were four main topics that teachers where given information about. The first was classroom roles and rewards that help establish routine and reinforce positive behaviour. Then, information was shared about creating positive relationships with students and maintaining a positive classroom environment. Both of these practices help students create connections and understand the consequences of actions within the classroom. The third topic was using role playing and imagination as part of instruction. This helps students immerse themselves in their learning and think of ways to apply learning outside the classroom without actually leaving. Finally, resources were shared to help write out detailed classroom management plans and build consistent consequences, both good and bad, for students.

The day was helpful for all the teachers. Teachers of all experience levels left with resources that they could use in their classrooms and ways to help improve student learning.
