Primary School Subjects Department: A Visit to the World of Microbes
On Nov 11th, 2019, Professor Zhang, a senior research scientist from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, was invited to Pudong campus to give a lecture about the world of microbes.
Professor Zhang first introduced the concept and classification of microbes briefly. He then talked about a place full of microbes—one we are both familiar with, yet don’t often think about: our digestive system.
Our digestive system is full of different types of microbes, both good and bad. The total number of these microbes is actually more than the number of cells in the system. These invisible creatures have a huge impact on our health. Once the balance between the good microbes and bad ones is lost, we get sick. However, we can regain the balance by eating certain foods, such as onions, garlic, cheese, and yogurt.
After learning some information about microbes, the students got to take a peek at this invisible world. With the assistance of microscopes, our students had a close look at some microbes and witnessed their amazing world.
It was a wonderful experience, and we are extremely grateful for the teachers from the Institute of Organic Chemistry.
