Grade 6-8: Career Day Lecture
On October 31, students enjoyed several career lectures from guest speakers who are esteemed professionals in their fields. Some of them are senior managers, some are engaged in high-tech industry, some are famous writers or photographers, and some are senior researchers from famous universities. They talked about their career experience from different perspectives, showing students a variety of career development prospects.
G6:Find the “Secrets”
The 6th graders learned a lot of “secrets” of the profession that they are interested in. First, the students welcomed Ms. Ouyang, the scholar of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). She talked about the knowledge of protein and bioscience. Then Ms. Liu, the associate professor of Fashion & Art Design institute at the Donghua University shared the most memorable experiences of her career with the students. This helped the students understand what successes and challenges fashion designer could bring. Ms. Liu pointed out that the textile industry is one of the most polluted industries in the world, so the recycling of material is important. She encouraged students to donate unwanted clothing, which can not only reduce waste and pollution, but also help those in need.
The fashion design demonstration was followed by a wonderful presentation from Ms. Yang about animation production. Ms. Yang has worked in cultural media industry for 20 years. In recent days, she devoted herself into animation making industry. She started with “What is animation?” and then gave many vivid examples about the three steps to create animation.
Following Ms. Yang’s lecture was excellent presentations about accounting and artificial intelligence (AI) by Ms. Zhu and Mr. Song. Ms. Zhu introduced the knowledge of the accounting in a simple way. Mr. Qiao discussed the application and development of AI in China with students. This lecture stimulated curiosity and imagination, so that students gained a deeper understanding of AI technology.
G7: Learn professional features
There were four outstanding guests sharing the professional features of different professions for grade 7 students.
Ms. Grace Tsao, the chief physician of general practice in foreign hospitals, shared her experience in the daily work of doctors with the students, and talked about how to become a doctor, and the future work prospects of doctors based on her own work experience. Ms. Sun, an excellent independent producer, shared the experience of becoming an excellent producer and the challenges and gains in normal production. Ms. Huang, Fred Hutchinson Cancer research center, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA, shared the work of biostatisticians, the learning of science and passion. Mr. Shen, chief information officer of Jaguar Land Rover JV, shared the application of modern vehicle manufacturing and AI technology in the automobile industry for students.
The four outstanding guests are leaders in various industries. Their passionate speech combined with their own experience attracted warm applause from the students. The students not only had more understanding of these industries, but also made it clear that they should lay a good foundation at this stage and prepare for a better future.
G8: Talked about future ways
Six leaders from different industries were invited to the career day lecture of 8th grade students.
Mr. Feng, lead of Microsoft Service, GCR, shared with students the experience of how Microsoft can change and benefit the society through technology. Mr. Jing, head of innovation and technology Continental China, talked about future ways of travelling and intelligent transportation. From the financial point of view, Ms. Chen, managing director of Orient Summit Capital, introduced to the children how to combine real estate with finance and how to operate in the capital market. Ms. Liu Liu, famous contemporary writer and screenwriter, shared her experience of becoming a writer and talked about the topic of "what kind of person is suitable to be a writer". Doctor Zhang, Research Fellow, UMich-SJTU Joint Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, introduced to the students what an academic life is all about. Life expert and famous photographer Uncle Ya talked about how to be a straight A student who can learn and play better.
Overall, from different industry perspectives, combined with their own professional experience, the guests told students a vivid career introduction lesson in a simple and profound way. The students learned a lot and they all had a great time!
