Chemistry Department: Mole Day

November 2, 2019

From October 23rd through 25th, 2019, Mole Day was celebrated at Shanghai High School International Division.

Mole Day has interactive chemistry experiences every year. This year, many new and interesting activities were prepared for the students. 150 years ago, the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev discovered periodic law and created the periodic table of elements. For this reason, 2019 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table. The table is an iconic image and a vital tool for all who learn and work in scientific fields. Students from grade 9-12 in SHSID made a huge Periodic Table and a timeline of elements. Their project included creative and artistic depictions of each of the 119 elements in the periodic table.

In addition, Dr. Hu, who has been committed to the cause of environmental protection, gave students an open class on sustainable development. Students of grade 9-10 who are interested in the chemical industry visited the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone and Henkel, a leading German company in the industry. And Dr. Cao from East China University of Science and Technology gave a wonderful lecture on computational chemistry to the students. Through these activities, students gained a better understanding of chemistry and scientific history.
