High School Chemistry Department: Professional Development Day

October 25, 2019

On October 18, 2019, Shanghai High School International Division Chemistry teachers visited the Xupu branch of the Shanghai Urban Investment Environment (Group) Co., Ltd. This visit helped teachers learn more about the collection process of garbage classification and provided more materials for future chemistry teaching.

Shanghai produces 21,000 tons of garbage every day, which has the potential to cause huge environment problems. Learning how to use different properties of substances to classify and dispose garbage—for example, the water content in dry waste is measured to evaluate whether the classification of dry waste is up to standard or not—offers opportunities to inform students to utilize their knowledge of chemistry in real lives. Garbage classification has a lot benefits, such as reducing the size of the area needed for waste collection, reducing environmental pollution and turning waste into recyclable material. It also enables students to engage more with the changes brought about in their real lives that is related to the content studied in chemistry class, enhancing their sense of achievement in learning.
