IT Subject Day -- BIT DAY

Ada Lovelace Day is held every year on the second Tuesday of October. People celebrate and honor Ada Lovelace, the world’s first programmer, for her contributions to computer science. In 2019, Ada Lovelace Day took place on October 8th. On the very day, Shanghai High School International Division began the BIT DAY activities, with “Hello, World!” as the theme. During the week, the computer department and the student clubs STEM Doge Daily and More Club jointly held a variety of activities.

On October 8th and 9th, three wonderful PA lectures were held. Weng An Zhi talked about “Hello Greek”. He shared his process of learning programming, and the experiences he accumulated in his participation in the project. He encouraged the students to think more, do more, and create more. Li Li Zhi held two PA lectures about “Hello Minecraft”, which creatively popularized the concept of logic gates in computer science. It was amazing to teach students to use the red stone in the popular game —Minecraft.

On October 10th, the IT101 Knowledge Contest was held in the entrance hall of the ZhengTao Building and Xian Mian auditorium. The 101 computer science questions were posted on the board, every student eagerly answered the questions. They gained knowledge, but also prizes.

On October 11th, the “Turtle Run!” and “Everyone Can Code” activities were successfully held in the YiFu Building. Turtle Run! Allowed students to use Python turtle to draw in limited time. Everyone Can Code let more teachers experience the fun of programming.

Another BIT DAY activity is CODE for SHSID, which received positive contributions from students who drew various graphs related to school in Python language.

BIT DAY activities as a whole attracted more students to understand computer science and enhance their understanding of computer basics.
