Primary and Middle School English Department: Week 1-4 Review and Upcoming Events
Since the beginning of September, primary and middle school English department has organized following activities:
Open Classes
The department arranged two English open classes for the month of September. Thank you to Abby Osse (3rd Grade) and Amy Pilsbury (4th Grade) for opening up the classrooms so their fellow educators could gain experience and insight. Abby led a class that offered many opportunities for student empowerment. Meanwhile, Amy engaged and thoroughly taught about figurative language. The next English Open Class will be on October 23rd by Nicole Efimetz (5th Grade).
English Writing Competition
The primary grades 1-5 have been busy developing their writing skills over the first 4 weeks of school. During week 4, the “Little Star” writing competition was introduced. The students are encouraged to submit their writing to showcase their abilities.
The students seemed excited and enthusiastic to begin writing their short stories about “LOVE”. The short stories should be no longer than 2,000 words (there is no minimum requirement), and entries must be the sole work of the entrant. Deadline is January 10, 2020.

Story Telling Competition(Grades 4-5) andReading Adventure Week(Grades 1-3) are upcoming in October and November.
In Story Telling Competition, students will practice their oral speaking skills and compete in a story telling mode. Students will recite a narrative created in class to their classmates in three rounds of competition ( Round 1- Week 8; Round 2- Week 11; Round 3- Week 13)
During Reading Adventure Week, students will practice and appreciate creative reading and writing. Students and teachers will collaborate to create a school-wide story. The students will have themed days to promote reading and writing strategies. On November 15th, Dav Pilkey (author of Dog Man) will come talk to Grades 2-3.
We look forward to those activities and we believe that our students can develop good learning habits while improving their English learning through various activities.
