High School Math Department: Math Demo Class Given by Principal Ma Feng
On the morning of Sep. 12, Principal Ma Feng offered a fascinating math demo class in the ZhenTao Building. In the context of region partition, Principal Ma raised two open-ended questions, both of which were close to real life: issues relating to children’s enrollment to the nearest elementary school and choosing locations for hazardous waste dumping. All of the students were deeply engaged by the course content and the Voronoi Diagram demonstration using Geogebra (a mathematical software). The invited guest teachers also greatly enjoyed the impressive class.
In class, students thought comprehensively and discussed actively. They used theory to partition areas and make decisions. With more practical problems raised by students, such as the feasibility of making waste disposal sites close to residential area, schools, or hospitals, students’ initial plans were constantly being reexamined. The interactive and cooperative environment created between Principal Ma and the students facilitated the students' absorption and application of knowledge and theory. In additon, students' humanitarian care and civic consciousness were also developed.
A huge thank you to Principal Ma for bringing us a wonderful and thought-provoking demo class.
