Grade4-7:Fire Drill
The students in Grades 4-7 at Puxi Campus participated in a fire drill on September 12th, 2019.
Puxi 4th and 5th Grade: Fire Drill
All the fourth and fifth graders participated in the fire drill on September 12th, 2019 during Personal Growth class.
A fire emergency can happen at any moment. To best protect all the students, teachers, and staff from an interior fire, we have an effective fire safety plan set in place every semester. This time, the school made sure that the New Art Building was compliant with the latest fire codes and regulations. We have installed smoke detectors and an alarm system in the building. A clearly marked escape route that was as short and direct as possible was prepared for every single classroom. Students learned about the routes at the very beginning of the semester, as they were totally new to this building.
The 4th and 5th graders took the drill very seriously. They lined up immediately at the door when the fire alarms went off. All of them arrived at the designated safety location quickly and calmly with towels covering their noses. The fire drill monitors raised up the green cards, which showed that everybody was safe. The routine for the first fire drill was from each homeroom. During the second drill, students in 4th grade left from their English classroom and students in 5th grade left from their Math classroom. After the second practice, a meeting was held to discuss more tips and advice on safety at school.
Though these were only drills, practicing these procedures is incredibly important as every SHSID student needs to know what to do and how to behave in an emergency.
G6-G7: Fire Drill
The Mid-Autumn festival is coming! Before enjoying the long holiday weekend, we need to be prepared in case of a fire. Therefore, on September 12th, a fire drill was held in the middle school building.
The fire drill took place during YD class in the afternoon. Before practicing, the teacher explained what we need to do in case of a fire. The teachers emphasized the usual rules of a fire drill. These rules are crucial to our safety if a fire breaks out, especially with the recent changes in our building. With the 4th and the 5th graders joining us in the Middle School Building, we, the 6th and the 7th graders, have moved up to the 3rd and the 4th floor. This year, we walk up and down four flights of stairs instead of two. We also had new escape routes because of the building renovations. We had to know our routes and the new gathering points on the field. Even though everyone was anxious to leave the building, we stayed calm because needed to avoid jostling our way through, bumping into others, or overtaking anyone in front. As the oldest students in this building, the 6th and 7th graders have to set an example. We evacuated in an orderly manner and helped those requiring assistance.
In the middle of the lecture, the fire alarm rang unexpectedly. We grabbed our towels and rushed out. Smoke spread around the building. Some new students were caught off guard initially; however, they quickly understood and got out safely. After the first drill, our teachers pointed out areas where we could improve. Then, a second drill was launched. This time, we pretended the fire alarm went off during math class. Now fully prepared, this time around we arrived at the designated area much faster and smoother.
The fire drill was a success. We now know what to expect and do in case of a fire, which we hope will never happen.
