Grade 12: Senior Orientation -- Day 3

September 5, 2019

On September 4, 2019, after an exhausting but fruitful journey on Sun Moon Island, the senior students of SHSID returned to campus for the last day of Senior Orientation. On this day, the students were allowed to choose from a myriad of activities to attend. In preparation for the upcoming college application season, the school provided activities such as Group Interviews, Personal Statement Writing Workshops, One-to-One Interviews, and Technical Writing Workshops. Other than college preparatory activities, the school also provided countless other activities such as Personality Tests, Bridge Building, and Desert Island, where students were given a chance to learn more about themselves and their schoolmates.

Each student was sent a survey during the summer regarding which activities they wanted to attend, and by the time they arrived at school, a schedule was already planned for all of the students who attended. Many students found the day very interesting and educational. Jiayi from class 12(1) reflected on how she found the Personal Statement Writing Workshop enlightening. “The Powerpoint was really helpful,” she recalled, “it is a nice starting step." This sentiment was shared among various other students as they eagerly participated in each activity.

The group interview was a really special activity during Senior Orientation. First, the students were presented with a game. Then, the guests from Johnson & Johnson presented the students with unique individual observations they noticed during the previous activity. The Black Box was also filled with excitement. According to Frank from 12(1), the activity held there was very interesting. The students were first given cards with different personality traits written on them and were then given time to trade different cards with people to explore different personalities. The founder of Lumina, a famous app designed to explore personalities, came to explain the different types of personality traits.

By the end of the day, each student left with something new—a better personal statement, more friends, new interview techniques and much more.
