High School Physics Department: Journeys in International Science School
A two-week long biennial program originally founded by Professor Harry Messel and supported by The Physics Foundation and the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, the International Science School consists of approximately 120 scholars selected from around the globe including China, USA, Japan, India, UK, and Australia and among them SHSID students were represented. This year, the overarching theme of the program was Frontier Science. Lectures covering a lot of topics from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration given by NASA flight director Mr. Matt Abbott to nanotechnology to quantum computers and more set the basis for our day-to-day activities. Along with the lectures were hands-on experiments in which students acquired interesting knowledge and experience. The program also provided students with opportunities to interact with and learn from distinguished guests at social seminars and gala dinners from whom a lot of first-hand information about potential career developments and pathways as scientific researchers was obtained.
Apart from academics, the program also allowed students a lot of fun time. Harbor cruising around the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge was the most-loved event by the ISS scholars as they spent the night partying and having fun with newly made friends. Being able to see a glint of the actual International Space Station up in space made the cruising night even more unforgettable in an "ISS way".
The International Science School program became the highlight of the academic year for many, if not all, of the scholars who attended it. It truly was an amazing time spent with the outstanding peers around the world.
