Vice Dean of Wharton Business School Visits SHSID
On May 22nd, 2019, SHSID was honored to invite Professor Tony Cai, the Vice Dean of the Wharton School, to speak to a group of sophomores and juniors about the revolution of big data in modern society. This was an especially notable occasion, as it was Prof. Cai’s first time speaking to high school students.
During the presentation, Prof. Cai first introduced the concept of big data, stating that it refers to the use of technology for making educated decisions based on personal experiences, and he provided examples of its applications, such as in healthcare, finance, and crime prevention. Prof. Cai then proceeded to illustrate the mechanisms behind big data technology by presenting students with an infographic on artificial intelligence's potential in providing personalized healthcare. Not only was this highly informative and comprehensible, but it was also a chance for students to take a glimpse into our future as technology continues to advance. To close his presentation, Prof. Cai used AlphaGo to illustrate how big data has advanced to the point that machines have surpassed the intelligence of human prodigies. Since its invention, AlphaGo, a self-taught Go game-playing robot, has defeated its predecessor Ke Jie, the human Go game prodigy and one of its best human players in the world, in a remarkable 3-0 victory.
To hear Professor Tony Cai's presentation on the big data revolution was truly a phenomenal and enlightening experience. With an enhanced understanding of artificial intelligence, Prof. Cai's introductory lecture has opened a new realm for all students to explore.
