SHSID Students Performed Amazingly in the CYBL Shanghai Tournament
On May 18th and 19th, more than 20 SHSID students attended the CYBL (China Youth Business League) Shanghai regional tournament. The competition tests students’ critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, and public speaking skills though four modules: Accounting, Marketing, Finance, and 2 case presentations.
The case this year is based around the popular instant noodle brand, Master Kong. The students were provided with China’s recent yearly trends in instant noodle demand and asked to both predict the future trends in instant noodle sales and give advice to Master Kong’s management on business decisions.
The intense competition took up two days over the weekend. On Saturday, about 25 groups of students participated in a company investment simulation and discussed how to invest in various companies in order to gain the most profit. Students then presented their analysis of the factors contributing to a rise in instant noodle sales as well as their predictions for future sales trends. On Sunday, students functioned as young accountants while taking the accounting tests and simulations. They were then further challenged in the marketing module: Competitors needed to analyze statistical data to decide which country they should invest in to gain the most benefits. Lastly, the students were required to give a second presentation on their solutions for sustaining Master Kong Inc.’s sales value.
Even with younger participates this year, SHSID took home various prizes in all four modules. The marketing module championship title was won by SHSID team 255, which is made up of William Li from 8(11), David Ding from 8(8), and Allen Feng from 8(7). SHSID students also dominated in the finance & economics module. SHSID Team 222 of Alex Xue, Derek Sun, Haobo Xi and Yuangen Su from 7th grade won 2nd place. Team 188 of Hannah 8(5), Heather 8(8), Leonie8(9) won 4th place in case presentation. SHSID students also won other prizes in the four modules.
The two days of the CYBL Shanghai Tournament were not only for competing, but for learning business concepts and interpersonal skills. Whether the students won prizes or not, they all gained valuable knowledge on being excellent businesspeople.
