Puxi Grade 4 Math: Geometry Project

April 12, 2019

Recently, the fourth graders learned geometric terms in class. Their work culminated in a 3D math project called Geometry City. The students worked in groups as companies to create a city of geometric shapes, angles, and lines. They needed to follow the construction specifications, which included parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines, as well as 2D shapes like the trapezoid and rhombus. They also included 3D shapes like the cylinder, pyramid, cone, and sphere in their city. A tessellation was also included in each city near a body of water that had a line of symmetry. The students came up with various creative names and themes for their cities.

During the math class on April 12th, students presented their projects and completed a reflection paper, on which they needed to evaluate their own contribution to this group work and give suggestions for improvements on this project. Reflection is always assumed as one the most important abilities in character cultivation, which helps students gradually develop into independent learners.

Students really liked this math project, since it not only helped them summarize the material that was taught in class, but also offered them an opportunity to cooperate with their classmates. The fourth graders also gained a sense of achievement and happiness during this Geometry Project.
