Puxi Grade 1: A Math Lesson in Lawson’s

April 11, 2019

Life is education, and education is life. In the math class on April 10th, the Grade 1 students of Puxi campus went to the Lawson convenience store on campus to use their mathematical knowledge in a real life situation.

The Lawson store manager kindly agreed to help us and each student prepared 10 Yuan for this activity. The students chose what to buy for themselves within their given budget, not only applying their math skills to a real-world situation but also practicing their financial management skills. Students entered the store and viewed the goods on display while calculating what they could afford to buy. Lawson’s staff kindly helped the students with their purchases if they needed it. The students then happily left the store with their purchases and returned to their classrooms.

Our students will have to make purchasing decisions throughout their entire lives. They need to be able to manage and budget their money when they are adults and apply the math skills that they learn in school. This was a great ‘practical’ experience in a real-world setting to help communicate to our students why learning Math is so important to their lives and futures.
