Grades 11-12: Economics Week
During the 6th week of the second semester, the high school section of SHSID hosted this year’s Economics Week. Events included the Economics video competition, the Economics Quiz Bowl, and various Economics lectures. High school students at SHSID actively participated in the event by dividing into groups and directing original Economics related mini-movies to be presented during the week. All videos had themes closely related with economics terminology, ranging from asymmetrical information to monopoly. Videos that left strong impressions on viewers were “Asymmetrical Love,” “MUNopoly”, and “OliTOKpoly,” which respectively focused on the economic concepts of asymmetrical information, monopoly, and oligopoly. The three videos allowed students to enjoy stories on dating, school clubs, and IB life, respectively, while also learning economics-related information in the process. Teresa from 11-1B, the producer and actress of “Asymmetrical Love”, reflected that “It was tremendously fun turning an economic concept into an unlikely comedy. The idea started out as a casual joke, but turned into something more than any of us could ever have imagined. We hope everyone can avoid this market failure and find their true love!”
The Econ Quiz Bowl, held in the form of a team problem-solving competition, allowed students from all grades to compete against one another. Many students were able to shine in this event by demonstrating their superior knowledge regarding economics.
Furthermore, the students were largely able to acquire useful information and benefit from the information sessions on economics related competitions including, but not limited to, NEC, FBLA and CYBL.
Through Economics Week, students were able to gain a better understanding of Economics by actively participating in numerous activities.
