Primary School Subjects Department: Paleontologist Guest Speaker

March 24, 2019

Grade 3 students have been studying rocks, minerals, and fossils. While learning about these Earth Science topics, students compiled questions that they couldn’t find the answers to in their textbooks and class materials. To answer the students’ questions, the third graders welcomed a paleontologist as a virtual guest speaker. Cristina Robins, PhD, digitally video-called the third-grade classes from Berkeley, CA. Dr. Robins is the Senior Museum Scientist at the University of California Museum of Paleontology and is currently working on categorizing 15 20-million-year-old fossils from a new whale species found in the San Francisco Bay area.

Digitally meeting a paleontologist allowed students to have one-on-one conversations with an expert in the field! It also inspired some of the students to think about paleontology or geology as a future career choice. Interacting with Dr. Robins helped make the third-grade fossil study come to life!
