CVML Course Started

March 18, 2019

On March 8th, a Computer Vision and Machine Learning (CVML) course taught by Professor Ni Bingbing from Jiaotong University started in Yifu Building 302 of SHSID—a room filled with advanced computers. During winter vacation, the students each completed a program that allowed a computer to play 2048. Although they hadn't learned these techniques in advance, they used various methods to achieve high scores, such as genetic algorithms, Minimax algorithms, and so on. After discussion and experiment during the vacation, they discussed the realization of artificial intelligence with Teacher Ni Bingbing on Friday. As soon as they entered the classroom, the students were amazed by the high configurations of the computers there. During class, Mr. Ni first introduced artificial intelligence: an intelligence that needs to be realized through much work by human beings. Since the ancient times, similar things have been created in response to human "laziness". From the puppets by Yanshi and the wooden horses by Zhuge Liang, to robots today—artificial intelligence has been updated from generation to generation. After briefly discussing the history of artificial intelligence, Mr. Ni began to talk about the most important component of artificial intelligence: features and algorithms. There are many algorithms for artificial intelligence, including early expert systems, genetic algorithms, Bayesian networks, current neural networks, support vector machines, etc. The most important part of artificial intelligence is to extract features. Mr. Ni showed the students various innovative ways to extract features, and the classroom was filled with joy.
