Senior Section Math Group: Celebrating the Pi-Day (II)
Light rain awakened the city of Shanghai on Mar 14, 2019. It seemed like a normal school day, but there was something UN-USUAL.
As one walked into the Zhong Xing or Xian Mian building, one could see that their walls were decorated by colorful pieces of paper, on which Math questions were printed. Little numbers were hidden in the corners, waiting for the students to discover them. Early birds had already formed groups to discuss how to solve the problems. In order to get 3.14, some used calculators and tested different combinations and arithmetic operations.
Almost all students from 9-12 participated in one of the long-term activities: The Math Video, the Math Rap, and the artwork competition themed “the Beauty of Math”. Hundreds of pieces of excellent work were received—much more and of much better quality than the teachers expected. An award ceremony took place during math class on March 14th for the 11th and 12th graders. Due to monthly exams, the Grade 9-10 prize results will be released afterwards.
Around 12:20, the 3v3 Math Competition, “Math Knockout”, began. The competition is run by the student club “STEM DOGES” and will take place from Mar 14 to Apr 30. The Zhong Xing and Xian Mian Lobbies were full of students watching the exciting and interesting battle.
Pi Day truly succeeded in stimulating student participation and interest. We eagerly anticipate the competitions and activities to follow!
In the afternoon, all the questions that had been posted on the wall, as well as the numbers hidden in the building, were torn off by the students. Everyone continued to discuss the Math problems joyfully.
We hope all the students enjoyed the Pi Day activities and hope they will not only learn Math but apply it and let it serve their lives for the better. Happy Pi Day!
