Primary School Subjects Department: Fun Science Activity: Metamorphosis on the Move

March 10, 2019

During the P&B class on March 5th, the 4thgraders of SHSID Pudong campus participated in an exciting science activity.

In recent science classes, grade 4 students studied different types of metamorphosis, especially the four distinct phases of complete metamorphosis (holometabola). With the guidance of homeroom teachers, the students engaged in a metamorphosis activity: “Metamorphosis on the Move”. The first stage was the “Caterpillar Crawl”. In order to act as a larva hatching from its egg, the students put on sleeping bags, slid on the floor, and had an exciting caterpillar race. The second game was “Crunch & Munch”, during which the “larvae” fed themselves with bread-substituted “leaves”. Every child who participated in the game tried their best to raise their body to reach the bread hanging above them, after which came the third stage of the activity: “Pupa Wrap”. In this game, the kids wrapped their group mates with paper rolls just as a caterpillar builds a chrysalis before the pupa stage. Finally, it was time for our caterpillars to hatch and become butterflies in the “Sip, Sip, and Away!” race. Imitating the butterflies, the students used straws to have a “nectar sipping” race. The students had to use the straws to carry paper flowers from one table to another. The group that collected the most flowers won the round.

Not only did the students have great fun during the activity but also reviewed what they had learned in science class. What a meaningful day!
