Grade 7: Cultural Bazaar Discussion

March 8, 2019

The Cultural Bazaar has become an immensely popular activity at SHSID, during which everyone engages in selling or buying goods from across the globe. Students work together with the guidance of teachers to raise the most funds for charity, in order to win the awards of “Most Charity Funds”, “Highest Student Approval”, “Highest Cultural Expert Rating”, and “Most Global Classroom”. From Brazil to Japan, each class presents a unique culture and its fundamental aspects, including food, art, music, language, sports, tourism, geography, history, and global awareness. Through the Cultural Bazaar, knowledge is learnt about countries through enticing activities and stimulating interest in global cultures. Students will also be able to enhance their global citizenship. During CAS, the students and teachers engaged in fervent discussions of the countries they represent.

During the first period of CAS, the foreign homeroom teachers gave a detailed explanation of the Cultural Bazaar and the country the homeroom was demonstrating. Students and teachers alike gained knowledge about countries around the world, their culture, and their local specialties. Some recommended ideas were proposed and proved to be extremely well-received. Students were fascinated by the diversity and diffusion of cultures around the world as they attempted new things and found new curiosities.

During second period, students focused on their own endeavors, forming groups of four to five. Each of these groups picked their own aspect of interest and partook in a comprehensive discussion of what their products would be. Some students decided on making traditional food, some aiming at making posters, while others came up with their own ideas. Meanwhile, the homeroom teachers came to each group, offering constructive feedback and answering questions.

At the end of the day, students left school feeling intrigued and inspired, buzzing to chat about what they were planning for the Cultural Bazaar with their friends, sharing and accepting new ideas—proof that SHSID’s students are evolving into even better global citizens.
