Grade 11:First Week Assembly

February 24, 2019

On February 21st, the first junior assembly presentation of the second semester was given by Billy from 11(7) and Endo from 11(1)A in the Xianmian Annex Auditorium. In their encouraging presentation, the two students described their experiences in the math modeling competitions HiMCM (High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling) and IMMC (International Mathematical Modeling Challenge) and shared the fruits of their learning with the audience. Math modeling is a challenging activity that asks students to solve real-world problems using mathematical functions, equations, and software, and to report their discoveries in a 30-page thesis. Billy and Endo recounted that their first attempt at modeling drone paths in 2017 was relatively unsophisticated. On their second attempt, the boys applied more advanced mathematical knowledge and had a more profound grasp of the challenge they were navigating. The foundational skills they developed on their first attempt allowed them to build an app and code complex software, showing significant improvement over the course of a year. Beyond learning more about math, they also came to appreciate the value of teamwork and collaboration. Under high-stress conditions, the team succeeded mostly due to their ability to work smoothly and divide tasks evenly, a skill that can be easily overlooked in group projects. Well done!
