Grade11:Volunteer Activities at Xuhui District Library

February 16, 2019

Every Sunday from December 2018 to January 2019, students from the Shanghai High School International Division came to the Xuhui Library to volunteer. Xuhui Library was initially founded in 1957, and the library that stands now at # 80 Nan Dan Road was built in 1990. With almost 30 years of history to its name, the library’s conditions have deteriorated over the years–and so have the books.

The library consists of two buildings: the south building and the north building. Our volunteer activities mainly took place in the south building.

Our job was to help get rid of old books in the library. Teams of two cycled through transporting the old books and removing them from the library’s system. Within just a morning, hundreds of books were removed. The librarian admired our efficiency and told us that the library is scheduled to undergo construction by the end of 2019, which will improve the old equipment and buildings.

In the process of volunteering, we gained a lot in return. Hopefully, after the reconstruction is completed and new library catalog is in place, more people can enjoy reading at the Xuhui Library in the future.
