Puxi Grade 3 :Volunteering Lesson
In grade three S+ English, the students collaborated to complete different volunteer activities. This lesson was based upon our biweekly in-class anchor text. The message of this text is that ordinary people can work together to improve the community around them. After reading, the students researched how fellow kids are making a difference. They then brainstormed problems within their own communities and thought of ways they could make a positive impact. The following English class, students were given a choice between six different volunteer activities to participate in around our school campus. These activities had a range of goals, from keeping our playground clean to improving safety in the school hallway. After completing their volunteering, students formed small groups and prepared a short presentation to teach their classmates about the volunteer work they did, problems they addressed, and what they learned from this activity. The presentation allowed students to reflect on what they had just accomplished. Students made personal connections to our anchor text and gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of the hard work our school’s staff does to keep it a clean, loving, and safe environment. This lesson allowed students to embody one of our school’s core values: building responsible global citizens. In this lesson, our students built social awareness and self-development through teamwork, compassion, communication, and perseverance.
