Grade 8:Charity Donation(Smile Club)

January 10, 2019

SHSID’s Smile Charity members and teachers donated hundreds of gloves, toys, stationery sets, and handmade scarves to underprivileged students at a primary school in Shanghai. The Charity had already spent months knitting over fifty scarves and purchasing supplies for the children to help them stay warm during the winter and study better. Smile Charity, one of SHSID’s many service learning groups, was created with the intention to help children from less fortunate families and spread kindness within our community. To this end, Smile Charity members knit scarves in exchange for service learning hours. The group is an excellent opportunity to not only help others in need but also learn the valuable skill of knitting, which can serve as a lifelong hobby or pastime.

On donation day, four student representatives from Smile Charity, along with teachers and other students, brought the scarves and other purchased supplies to the primary school. Despite being only a 20-minute drive from SHSID, the conditions there were vastly different. The road leading up to the school was a thin, dirt road that could barely allow two cars to pass by. The school itself was a relatively small wooden building surrounding a courtyard from three sides and the roof was slightly damaged in some areas.

The students were busy playing in the courtyard when the representatives from SHSID arrived with the scarves and supplies. The students looked up curiously from their games and lined up by grade and gender as soon as a bell rang. The principal of the school made a speech, thanking SHSID for its generosity, and all the students cheered in excitement when they learned they were receiving gifts. The representatives from SHSID spent time distributing all the supplies to the eager boys and girls, and afterwards, took some pictures with the students holding up their new presents. Afterwards, SHSID representatives were able to meet with the preschoolers as well, passing out toys and gloves to them too.

Visiting these children and seeing how grateful they were to receive these simple gifts allowed us to not only realize how important it is to help kids in need, but also to appreciate what we have and cherish the opportunities we’ve been given. This visit was very educational for all of us students. We were able to see firsthand the condition of the schools those less fortunate than us attend and understand how important it is to use the resources we’ve been provided with wisely. It was also a moment to truly appreciate the quality of our own school, SHSID, as well as all of the opportunities it has offered its students in receiving the best education. There will always be underprivileged children in need, so Smile Charity will continue to bring supplies to these children, and spread kindness, generosity, and goodwill within our community.
