Making Dumplings—SHSID G7-8 Chinese Culture Week
Dumplings are a traditional Chinese food which have a long history. They are deeply loved as they carry the Chinese people's longing for family, reunion, and happy life. Dumplings can be considered a staple food in the North and also a dish for the Chinese New Year. As the folk song says, “Dahan Xiaohan, eating dumplings for the New Year.”
On the second floor of the school’s Sodexo canteen, the teachers taught the students how to make dumplings and talked about their origin and culture. The dumplings packed by the students also had various ideas and forms. After the dumplings were made, they were handed over to the canteen chef for cooking. When the steaming hot dumplings were served on the table, the students were happy to taste their delicious flavors and feel the New Year's atmosphere in advance.
In addition to making dumplings, the Chinese teachers also planned cultural events for the students to experience, such as brush calligraphy and fan painting. Near the New Year, the students drew a red "Fu" or Spring Festival couple with a brush, symbolizing the red fire of the New Year. As the students painted Chinese style patterns and elements on the blank fans, they sincerely appreciated the charm of Chinese culture.
