Grade 11: Junior Assembly —— Fruit Fly Biology Lab

December 10, 2018

On December 6th, 2018, the weekly junior assembly was held. This time, Lily Peng from 11(1)B recalled her summer experience in a biology lab, where she conducted experiments focused on fruit flies. Lily worked with her friend Tina Liu 11(1)B to find out how many fruit flies a certain medicine could kill and calculate the rate at which they were killed.

The data collection and data analysis process was not at all easy. Since they included so many fruit flies in their experiment, many data points had to be precisely noted, compiled, and processed. Lily recalled that she and Tina routinely stayed up until around 1 o’clock or 2 o’clock in the morning to fully process the data they had collected during the day. Once, they even worked overnight at the lab.

Lily and Tina’s hard work payed off. For their insightful findings and creative lab project, they were awarded the first prize at the SHSID science competition/ Science and technology competition. Moreover, they recognized their enthusiasm for biology by conducting hands-on biology experiments. Congratulations!
