Primary Subjects Department: Adventures of the Scientific Exploring Club

Half of the semester has already passed, but the after-school clubs at Pudong campus are still going strong. With the guidance of their club teachers, the club members are conducting interesting science experiments as usual in the Adventure of Scientific Exploring Club. During the club meeting on November 24th, not only did the students learn about the negative health effects of sugary soda during the “Sink or Float” experiment, but they also brainstormed other science research questions closely related to daily life.

Starting this semester, SHSID—Pudong Campus establishedour Adventure of Scientific Exploring Club, which aimed to train student’s scientific researching skills, teamwork abilities, critical thinking, and creative thinking.

All scientific topics we discuss come from daily life. Using the scientific methods learned in class, the club members of the Science club make audacious hypotheses, conduct interesting experiments, collect and analyze data, and eventually make a conclusion with their group mates. With the help of their club teachers, students will record the whole research process as well. By the end of the semester, the students’ work will be sent to a scientific competition in the form of videos.

There are deep scientific principles behind the details of daily life. Only the children who are sensitive to nature and observe the world carefully can truly think through and understand the mysteries of science.In Adventure of Scientific Exploring Club, we encourage students to extract questions from daily life, make a hypothesis and prediction, and design and conduct an experiment to test their hypothesis. A paper plane made of which material flies the furthest? What kind of paper can hold fragrance for longest time? Can temperature affect the strength of a rubber band? Why do some things float and other things of the same size sink in water? We do our best to guide students and help them find out a question in daily life that they are interested in, and teach them to use correct scientific methods throughout the entire researching process.
