Middle School Biology Department: Controlling Yeast Fermentation

December 3, 2018

On Nov 28th, 8th grade students participated in an experiment in which they researched the rate of fermentation by yeast under different conditions. Students used five water bottles and added different amounts of salt, sugar and yeast to warm water, examining the amount of fermentation that takes place within 2 weeks. The scientific process the students followed helped them gain an idea of how basic scientific research takes place, and how scientists isolate factors within an experiment so that the experiment does not have false outcomes with incorrect conclusions. The main difference between this experiment and normal classes is that it was hands-on, and students were able to gain an understanding of how experiments work, not only through PPTs, but through conducting the experiments themselves. This experiment also served as pivotal preparation for the 2nd monthly research project that each individual student has to conduct. Students' personal experiences and increased knowledge of how to conduct scientific experiments will help them with their completion of the project. Good luck to all students!
