Grade 8: The Spirit of Sports Meet

November 22, 2018

Spirits were high as everyone waited to see the winners of the “2018 Sports Meet”. Ms. Shen took a few seconds to quiet everyone down, but you could still feel the gentle buzz of anticipation. After the winners for the individual events had all received their medals, it was time to give out the medals for the team sports. For the 4x100 relay, Class 8(4) snagged first place for the girls and class 8(10) won first place for the boys. For the Baseball competition, 8th graders may have lost to the 7thgraders this time, but the runner up teams were 8(3) & 8(4), and 8(9), 8(10) & 8(11). Lastly, for the best marching performance, the classes were 8(5) & 8(6), and 8(1) & 8(2) .

Sports are as stressful as they are bountiful, and we interviewed a few of the winners to find out more. Tom Zhang from 8(7) won two medals, one for the 400 meter and one for the 100-meter dash. He talked about how he makes time to practice even during the busiest days, “I usually spend most of my time on homework and then after that, I go running.” Sophie Li from 8(4) also talks about how she balances her academics and sports, “My academics and sports don’t really interfere with each other, but I spend most of my time on academics.” Second place winner Fenya Lyn Walter from 8(4) also said that during the 400 meter, she motivated herself by thinking about “the donuts that I was going to eat after the race.”

The Sports meet was a time for athletes to show off their skill, but it was also a celebration of comradery and sportsmanship. Even though this year’s sports meet is over, we can always look forward to next year.
