High School Biology Department: Open Class for Local Division Students

On November 16th, Mr. Portillo, a biology teacher from the international division, gave an open class to students from the local division in the lecture hall of the Yifu building. Mr. Portillo graduated from Lipscomb University. He has rich experience in teaching biology and conducting biological research. The main concepts discussed in this open class included “homeostasis”, “blood sugar regulation and diabetes”, and “thyroid hormones”. Through good analogies, interesting examples and inquiry-based teaching, Mr. Portillo encouraged students to think and participate in class. Students paid full attention to the class and some used fluent English to answer questions. After class, teachers from the local and international division had a short discussion on the key concepts and teaching style. This is the first time that local division students had a biology lesson given by a foreign teacher in the international division. More classes of this nature will be available in the future.
