Primary School: Spooktacular Halloween at School
This October, students and teachers at SHSID were excited about celebrating a spooky holiday, Halloween. In celebration of Halloween, the teachers and students at the Pudong campus began preparing and decorating weeks in advance. Come to visit us this week and you will see a spooky tree illuminated by tiny, orange pumpkins haunting the hallway, giant spiders spinning webs in every classroom, and black bats roosting in every nook of the school… A spooky, and perhaps magical, fog seems to be covering the entire campus.
This past Tuesday, the spirit of Halloween overtook SHSID's Pudong campus. As it is one of our favourite traditions, students and teachers came to school in all sorts of funny, creative, and scary costumes. There were groups of princesses busily walking through the halls to class, superheroes gathering together defeat evil on the playground, and all sorts of ghosts, skeletons, vampires, and witches eating lunch with one another in the cafeteria. The costumes were amazing this year!
Halloween is not just about wearing costumes! How could we celebrate Halloween without the tradition of trick-or-treating? All of the students were incredibly enthusiastic about trick-or-treating during passing periods and snack time. The teachers were prepared with loads of candies for every trick-or-treater. It was very special treat to see the joy on every child’s face as we put candies into their bags. Please remind your child to brush his or her teeth very well this week.
Parties are always more exciting when friends are together! That’s why we got the whole campus together for the Halloween Parade. After a full day of trick-or-treating, the teachers and students marched through the playground with their amazing costumes while judges looked for the most eye-catching designs. The students with the scariest, funniest, and most creative costumes will be awarded prizes in the coming week.
After the parade, the highly anticipated Halloween Carnival started. While the students marched around, the teachers used their super-powers to turn classrooms into playgrounds – just like magicians. Each class showcased different Halloween-themed games and activities for the students to explore and play. Halloween Bingo and Halloween Targets in the first grade were crowded with students; second grade had Halloween Crafts for those who like to work with their hands, and Musical Chairs for the more energetic ones. The Spider Races and Sensory Boxes in third grade tested their endurance and courage; teachers from fourth grade prepared Pumpkin-Pong and an elaborate Vocabulary Wax-Museum. These activities challenged their knowledge and agility. Finally, fifth grade had a Pumpkin Obstacle Course and a Pumpkin Decorating Contest to test their fitness and creativity. Walking through the hallways, you could hear the excitement and happiness of celebrating such a fun holiday.
During the Halloween party, the kids not only enjoyed the company of their friends and played fun games, but also gained a deeper understanding about the holiday. Each activity allowed them to learn and play. Although they were sad when the day came to an end, they are already looking forward to our next celebration.
