Grade 8: The Fun Math Service Learning Group Started Their Activities

November 2, 2018

On October 9th and 23rd, members of the Fun Math Service Learning group taught two classes to the fifth graders.

In the first class, we taught class 1, 2, and 3 about the basic rules of Pascal’s Triangle and some of its applications. We tried our best to explain it to them, but it was too hard for the fifth graders, so our teaching didn’t inspire their interests towards math. This is contradictory to our initial goal, which is to raise their interest in math and teach them fun things that they can understand. So, after reflecting on our first failure, we made a second presentation to class 5, 6, and 7 on the same topic. This time, we didn’t just tell them facts. Instead, we let them find the patterns themselves, and gave them hints to help them continue.

All the students were thinking and enjoying the fun of math. At the end of the presentation, we told them that the most important thing about learning math is not to memorize facts and rules, but to discover patterns and draw conclusions.

By doing this, they can improve their ability to learn, and to actually enjoy learning, which is the goal of the Fun Math Service Learning program. We are now working on the next presentation, and we hope it could be better than last time, and bring more FUN
