The Great Cookie Election of 2018

Each month, students in Grade 3 on Pudong campus “travel” to a new country to learn about that country’s history, geography, government, and economy. Right now, third graders are visiting the United States! After learning about U.S. history and geography, it was time to learn about the government.

The United States is a democracy. One of the important pieces of a democratic government is voting. To experience the democratic voting process, on Oct. 26, students took part in “The Great Cookie Election of 2018.”

Running for the position of “Greatest Cookie” were Candidate Oreo and Candidate Chips Ahoy. Students learned about campaigning, watched campaign advertisements, and even sampled a taste of each cookie. After listening, watching, and tasting, students created their own campaign posters for the candidate of their choice.

After the campaigning was finished, it was time for the voting to begin! Each registered voter (all students in the class) signed in to vote. Then, they each voted secretly behind a privacy screen. After celebrating their role in the democratic process with an “I Voted” bracelet, the votes were tallied. In 3(2), Candidate Oreo won unanimously! While in 3(1), Chips Ahoy won with a vote of 14 to 11.

Voting in the Great Cookie Election allowed students to experience the democratic voting process instead of just reading about it in their textbooks. They were able to be involved in the campaigning and research that goes into elections. Each student’s vote counted, and each students voice was heard.
