Grade 8: Lecture about First Aid Skills
Grade 8: Lecture about First Aid Skills
For the two CAS classes on Thursday, October 25, 2018, we were delighted to have Mr. Chen and his assistant, Stella, demonstrate some First Aid Kit skills.
Before Mr. Chen went into detail on the different aspects of first aid, he explained to us the purpose of learning first aid skills: To help yourself and others in times of life-threatening danger, and to establish a sense of self-protection. After a brief description of the general term "first aid kit", Mr. Chen invited Amanda to go up stage to be his partner in an improvised "skit" on "what to do if someone sprained their ankle". Mr. Chen and Amanda exemplified the method "RICE", which is the combination of "rest" and "ice" (for soothing the bruise). Proceeding onto the next pivotal first aid kit skill, Mr. Chen emphasized the importance of abdominal thrusts, which are used when people are choking, or more specifically, when there are obstructions in the upper airway. Natalie and Max volunteered to present this method with Mr. Chen, and the audience was engaged in their performance of abdominal thrusts. Next up was CPR, or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. He interacted with us by making us see how many times we breathe in 20 seconds; some said, 6, some said 7, and one even said 3. In order to determine when we should perform CPR, Mr. Chen stressed the significance of checking the victim's breathing. Numerous students carried out the 30 pumps on the body based on the rhythm of the students' enthusiastic clapping. Mr. Chen showed how each first aid kit skill should be performed extremely clearly and helped us construct a better understanding of when first aid should be used.
Throughout the first and some of the second CAS class, Mr. Chen kept the 8th graders concentrated and very entertained, seen through the audience's occasional laughter and some students' brilliant answers to questions Mr. Chen asked.
