Grades 9-10:Mole Day

Despite Mole Day actually being two days earlier than our school’s event on October 25th, students were no less excited to demonstrate their passion for the beauty of chemistry. During lunch break, ASB members and volunteers set up groups of desks, each with their own fun chemistry related activity, to teach and entertain the visiting students.

As the bell marking the end of fourth period rang, students of grade nine and ten went outside to discover a world of intriguing experiments and games. People rushed to the exchange desks to trade in the element cards they found throughout the day for candies and stuffed animals. Students at the trivia desk challenged each other on their chemistry knowledge with cool trivia facts about molecules and elements. Other groups gathered around a container of helium. They waited excitedly for their turn to suck out helium balloons. When the students inhaled the noble gas, their friends laughed hysterically at their ridiculous voices and sang funny songs together.

Other than offering fun games, Mole Day was also an event where students could learn and experience seemingly magical chemical reactions. Different desks featured lots of different fascinating experiments. One table allowed participants to make a shiny silver coating inside glass containers, while another let their participants make glowing fluorescent jars with vibrant colors. These experiments even caught the attention of students from higher grades and even some from the local division.

As the ASB announced that the event was over, the large number of students participating in Mole Day soon left for their respective classes elsewhere. Though Mole Day was only a brief activity for one afternoon, the students earned some more chemical knowledge and gained further interest in this amazing science.
