Grades 1-8 Sports Week Series Report 4:Sports in Charity
Grades 1-8 Sports Week Series Report 4:Sports in Charity
On the fourth day of the sports week, 5th & 6th grade teachers and students brought a live report of the delivery of charitable donations in Henan and Qinghai, bringing the spirit of "visible charity" and sports week to local schools. On Oct. 17, after taking the train for 14 hours, the SHSID grade 5 and 6 charity team arrived at Zhoukou in Henan Province. The team was lead by Ms. Shirley and Mr. Johnson, followed by 6(2) Owen and Yiwei, 6(8) Daniel, 5(2) Daniel, 5(7) Jenny, and their parents.
We first visited Luzhuang primary school. Our SHSID Grade 5 and 6 section donated two “Book Corners” and were organized by the students there. We then joined their sports meet and donated sports equipment. Ms. Shirley and our students gave speeches to the students on behalf of the teachers and students of SHSID.
In the sports meet, we participated in a lot of sports with them, creating many precious memories. This marks the fifth year SHSID’s Grade 5 and 6 students have organized charity activities in the city of Qinghai. Under the organization of the Futian Environmental Protection Educator program, nine pairs of volunteer students and parents and two volunteer teachers came to Qinghai to distribute materials and bring warmth to the children in need. Let’s read the report from the ground by Ms. Zhuo:
In the morning, we first arrived at Sheren Primary School. This is the fourth year I have come to Sheren, and it was great to see the children smiling in the sunshine again. The school has gone through a big change. Surrounded by turf carpets, a brand new plastic basketball court has been built for children to have fun in. To enrich children’s school life, the old teaching building has been refurnished and became a multi-functional center that includes science laboratories, music rooms, art rooms, and more. There are also ping-pong tables in the schoolyard. The classrooms for the preschool children are decorated like a fairy-tale world. Only part of the old teaching building was preserved as a protected building. All of these show a great improvement in the physical environment of the school. However, due to the lack of water in the local area, the children are still unable to wash their hands after going to the toilet and could only drink water from taps, which means that it will take a lot of continuing efforts to truly improve their school life.As an ice-breaking activity before the distribution, our volunteers played interactive games with the local children. After a short lunch break, our volunteers took photos with the children and had a lot of fun together.
I had a new assignment this year– being the host and guiding the whole distribution process. The enthusiasm of the children helped me get rid of my nervousness and the entire distribution process went by smoothly. Great job to our volunteers! Unfortunately, some children didn’t receive shoes of the correct size, due to complicated reasons. Our organizer, Mr.Hu, is trying his best to solve these problems. At the end of our activity, we received lots of pears from the children as gratitude. Thank you all and see you again next year, Sheren Primary School! In the afternoon, we proceeded to the next four schools scheduled for the day. Do you guys still remember the stove we donated last year for the Xiahula Teaching Center? This year, Xiahula officially became one of our stops for donation. In addition, we also went to Lijiazhuang Primary School, Shanglagan Teaching Center, and Siergou Primary School. The weather in Qinghai is so unpredictable; it snowed last year when we came - stoves were used to warm up the classrooms, while today it was a bright, sunny day and even jackets were unnecessary. Since all four schools were not far away from each other and had a small number of students, our volunteers were ready and the whole distribution was completed successfully and efficiently! To hear more tales from our charity trip, please wait for our follow-up reports!
