High School Biology Department: Molecular Biology PBL

Students did soil serial dilution and a spreading plate in the ninth grade molecular biology PBL on October 11, 2018. Soil serial dilution and the spreading plate are necessary labs for soil bacteria isolation. In this class, students brought soil samples that interested them. Using sterilized water, the soil sample was diluted 100, 1000, 10000, and 100000 times. The soil suspensions with different dilution levels were then spread evenly on different LB agar plates, which were made in our Sep. 29th class. After the lab work, students wrote lab reports to review what they learned. Through this class, students practiced aseptic techniques and prepared for colony observation next class. Students showed great interest in lab work and were actively involved in learning. Everyone finished their experiments successfully.
