Grade 7: Parents' Meeting

Every year, the middle school teachers and administrators rally together to present a synopsis of the curriculum for every subject offered in grades 7 and 8. This year on September 28th, a sunny Friday evening, parents eagerly poured into the Xian Mian auditorium and mingled with homeroom teachers and subject heads. Some pleasant classical music danced overhead. Director Ni graciously helped to usher the teachers and parents into their seats. The mood of the crowd was light hearted, but there was a palpable concern for the impending subject matter that stood looming over the seated adults, and their young scholars at home. The evening officially began with opening remarks by Ni Minxue, Director of grades 7 and 8. Mr. Ni welcomed parents and initiated the theme of the evening: the transition from grade 6 to grade 7, and the difficulties students always face during this delicate period of time. He then motioned for the host and vice head of 7th grade, Jason Sonnefeldt, to invite the subject heads to proceed with their presentations, starting with Ms. Kelly Kraft, Head of English. Ms. Kraft presented the English curriculum and the major assessments used, including the MAP and IOWA exams; Ms. Liuqiong charmed the audience with a passionate overview of the Chinese curriculum; Ms. Yanjie spelled out the details of the math curriculum and levels; Ms. Cindy Rees sent the audience back in time to Mesopotamia, before hurdling back to the modern era; Mr. Dustin Sharp shook the earth with his rock solid knowledge of plate tectonics; Ms. Liuming made the audience come alive with a snapshot of life science; Ms. Shenying energized the audience with the physics curriculum; and finally, Ms. Yanzeng inspired the audience with a highlight reel of student service learning projects, which students always look forward to in grade 8. The heart warming videos brought the night to a close, and parents went home feeling secure and confident having sent their sons and daughters to SHSID.
