Grade 11: College Counseling Course – Key terms in college application

On September 25th, juniors gathered in the Xian Mian Annex Auditorium for their third college counselling session. In this session, Ms. Cui explained the key terms of college applications that students should become familiar with, for both US and non-US colleges. She began with an overview of some of the most common “decision” terms—ED, EA, RD, REA, and SCEA. Ms. Cui made a special note of reminding students that the US has distinct time zones and therefore, distinct cut-off times. Next, Ms. Cui guided the students through different scenarios that may occur once a student submits his or her application, and what the student should do in response to each scenario. She moved on to discuss the UCAS application system for students interested in colleges in the United Kingdom, listing the major features and what aspects UK colleges seek for in an applicant. It is noteworthy that colleges in the UK do not consider an applicant’s extracurricular activities, sports, legacy, or well-roundedness, and instead opt for academic strength as their top priority. Finally, Ms. Cui browsed through the required application materials for US and non-US colleges to ensure that students can clear up any confusion regarding different application systems. At the conclusion of the session, students left the auditorium with a more solid understanding of the college application process and the confidence to succeed.
