SHSID 25th Anniversary Lecture Series——The Story of the Wall Street

On September 25th, Mr. Jeffrey D. Brown, Wall Street executive and Stanford University lecturer, came to talk with SHSID students.

Mr. Brown began by recounting his experience searching for jobs in an unwrinkled, white dress shirt on Wall Street. Mr. Brown then discussed the differences between stocks and bonds, two fundamental elements of finance, by leading with the question: “Where do companies get money from?". Using his own stock investment experience, he guided students into the world of finance.

After the lecture, students asked questions such as: “If I want to find a job in an investment bank after I graduate, do banks prefer students majored in economics or other subjects?” “What’s the difference between economics and finance?” and, “Could you give me an example of the tragedy of commons?”

It was a unique experience for students to learn directly from a prominent expert in the finance field.
