Grade 11: College Counseling Course

On Tuesday, September 18th, high school juniors gathered in the XianMian auditorium during their weekly college counseling course for a lecture by Mr. Slonim on personal statements. The lecture started off with a quick introduction on what a personal statement is. Mr. Slonim put an emphasis on honesty and originality. A few examples of bad and good topics were given before the three specific types of personal statements were introduced. These include the Common Application, the UK system, and the UC system; each system requires a slightly different style of personal statement. The students then discussed how to make bad topics interesting and how they would write their own personal statements. After a few questions, the lecture came to an end. Even though most juniors still do not feel completely confident with writing their personal statements, this counseling course definitely gave them a better idea of preparing for it in the future.
