Debate Club:SHSID at the Shanghai Regionals
Debate Club:SHSID at the Shanghai Regionals
On the weekend of May 26 and 27, 2018, one of the most competitive Public Forum tournaments in China, aside from the National Championship, took place in Shanghai.
Over 400 high school debaters convened to discuss one of the most controversial and relevant issues of our time: economic globalization as a threat to the national interest of countries. This resolution’s complexities and nuances included necessary discussions of not only the pragmatic effects of economic globalization, but also what “national interest” entails and how far the definition of “economic globalization” ought to go. It is also worth noting that the Shanghai Regional, unlike most others, divides its competitors into two divisions based on participants’ registered schools, which includes a separate “International” bracket. Though it is a large generalization, this meant that all debaters from SHSID—an “international” debate school—faced only opponents from schools with a strong background in English, removing any linguistic advantages.
SHSID had a brilliant showing at the end of the tournament. Emilie Zhao and Annie Chen reached the Semifinals in International Novice and both ranked in the Top 10 as individual speakers. Lelan Hu was another finalist and was awarded 3rd best speaker in the International Open. This list leaves out the many Middle School debaters who have been rising on the debate scene. Congratulations to everyone who participated!
