Grade 9: Project-based Learning Introduction Lecture

On September 6th in the XianMian Annex Auditorium, the 9th graders were introduced to a new program: Project-based Learning. All students enjoyed it and benefited greatly.

So, what is Project-based Learning (PBL)? PBL is a recent addition to SHSID which focuses on helping students gain new skills and practical experience by having them work for an extended period on a project that has seven key goals. These goals include: STEM-based skills, difficult questions, continuous inquiry, real-world experience, decision-making, reflection, receiving and reacting to criticism, and presentation of the final product.

PBL was implemented only last year and now contains dozens of courses for students to engage in solving real-world problems. The courses contain two levels: standard and challenge. For 9th graders, standard is the only available level. In it, a teacher guides the students as they complete their investigations into the question/problem. In 10th grade, both levels are available. If one were to choose a challenge level course, they would have to make their own questions, using their own existing experience to help them come up with a solution. The course has students complete an in-depth investigation into a problem, and at the end of the semester, present their findings in a showcase, which will be graded. Courses include activities like using a mathematical lens to view the world, participating in off-campus STEM competitions, creating self-designed devices, public speaking, product design, and even studying the chemical processes involved with making coffee.

The PBL program is a gateway filled with opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience and learning new skills by tackling real problems instead of just taking tests. I look forward to seeing what will result from the combined skill and creativity of hundreds of students working together.
