SHSID students participated in the NCF Envirothon

From July 22nd to July 28th, a team of five SHSID students participated in the NCF Envirothon held in Potacello, Idaho. The team members were the champions of the China National Envirothon back in April and represented China in the 2018 US Finals. The team had to go up against 50 state or provincial champions from the US and Canada.

The SHSID team, thanks to the attentive guidance worked diligently for the week and received an excellent achievement of Top 20, which is the record for Chinese teams in the US. In addition, they placed 7th in the Soils test and received a stellar score of 92/100 on the Forestry exam. However, the event was more than just scores and competition—it was more of a learning experience and a great opportunity for the team to interact with the natural world. Besides visiting rangelands, which are nonexistent in Shanghai, the team also had the chance to do hands-on fieldwork, which was not included in the China round due to the metropolitan environment. In a world where daunting problems like climate change and habitat destruction are persistent threats, Envirothon provides students a chance to learn about how to take measures to preserve the environment. The team intends to create an Envirothon club this semester, hoping to inspire further generations of SHSID students to appreciate the environment and join the competition.
