SHSID Fall 2018 Foreign Teachers Orientation

Friday, August 24th, 2018, marked the beginning of Shanghai High School International Division’s New Teacher Orientation. Despite being thousands of miles from home and exhausted from the long journey to China, all new foreign teachers gathered in front of the North Gate at 7:00 AM to receive their comprehensive health check. After what can only be called a whirlwind bonding experience, teachers were sorted into their respectivePrimary, Middle, and High School departments to receivetextbooks, tour their offices, and learn about the SHSID program.

On Saturday morning, new teachers gathered in the Xianmian Auditorium to receive further insight on day-to-day life at SHSID. FAO leader Helen Hu opened the discussion with an encouraging introduction which outlined the school’s expectations for the fall semester. Veteran teachers Michael Corayer and Josh Pickart followed with an enlightening presentationon the striking andnuanced cultural differences one may encounter while living in Shanghai.New teachers were then given a comprehensive IT support presentation as well as tailored program introductionsfrom their designated Assistant Principals of Curriculum, Danielle Strohmeyer and Mark Seeley.

On Monday, August 27th, all foreign teaching staff gathered in the Xianmian Auditorium for a day of ice-breaking introductions and discussions. After a warm welcome from the school’s administrators, Principal Ma and PrincipalLiutook the floor to offerinspiring speeches outlining SHSID’s rich history, inspiring development, and bright future.To further acclimate teachers to their life abroad, special visits were also made by Shanghai Police Department, and United States Consulate.

Over the remainder of the week, teachers spent time meeting with their mentors, group leaders, and liaisons to develop a strong internal support structure for the new fall semester. Groups met to collaborate on plans for prospective assignments, lessons, and exams to ensure a balanced curriculum and workload for each of their classes.

Despite a few rainstorms, long walks, and early mornings, SHSID’s Fall 2018 Orientation for both new and returning teachers was a great success. Let’s continue to strengthen the bonds we’ve made thus far and work together to ensure a wonderful fall semester!
