High School History Department Meeting

On August 28th, 2018, all of the High School History teachers met in room 127 of the Zhong Xing Annex Building to hold the ‘Overview and Expectations’ department meeting. Ms. Li Yunuo hosted the meeting and began by giving a warm welcome to two new teachers. She then briefly introduced the schedule for the first week of the new semester.

Ms. Li summarized the department's achievements during the previous semester and pointed out which aspects need to be improved and strengthened in the upcoming semester. She stressed the importance of class activities and encouraged teachers in the same group to contribute their ideas and share them in future department meetings. She also asked teachers to assign an essay or alternative writing assignment at least once a month to help the students improve their writing skills. The teachers are required to use red pens to do grading work and write down comments for long answers and essays, allowing students to receive timely feedback. She also recommended that teachers upload extra materials to BlackBoard if there is not enough time to play videos or finish reading long texts in class.

Mr. Chris Hodachok then reminded the teachers of focus questions based on experiences from the last semester. Firstly, S and S+ students will face transitional problems in note taking and essay writing. The teachers will need to instruct them very carefully, show every step clearly, and clarify the assessment criteria in order to help them adjust themselves to learning history in high school. He also suggested that teachers consider adding more test questions based on reading documents and assign more technology based projects, like website design or textbook making, rather than poster projects.
