Puxi Grade 6: Science Fair -- OM Games

On June 7th, the sixth grade students took part in the OM’s (Mind Olympiad) 5 sets of games in their CAS class. All of these five games were very fun and engaging!

The first set of games was called "Go Back to the Starting Point", which required students to make an A4 sized paper plane. When a student’s plane flew to 3 meters, it came back, and then the teacher measured the distance of its return. The second set of games was called “Gliding”, where students made another type of A4 paper airplane. The paper plane was placed on cardboard and lifted to a height of about 2 meters. Then, the cardboard was slightly tilted, and the paper plane was dropped. When the plane was dropped, it was expected to have at least glided a distance of 2 meters, however some planes just landed directly on the ground. Others drew a beautiful arc in the air and then gently fell to the ground. The third set of games was called “Paper Arch Bridge”, and here the students used an A4 paper to create a curved bridge. The teacher then placed two one-yuan coins on it, and after 3 seconds, measured the bridge span; the bridge was not to be shorter than 10 centimeters. The fourth set of games was called “Back-and-forth Rubber Band Car", and students used a rubber band to power a car. When the car reached the returning line, it returned and stopped within a given area. The last set of games was called “Inertial Car”, where students made a car and placed items on top of it. The car then descended along a slope and hit a pre-placed obstacle. This showed the students that the car will stop, but the object that was on top of it will keep on moving because of inertia.

The OM activities were not only fun and challenging, but also allowed the students to practice their manual work skills and enhanced their ability to innovate designs. It is no wonder why the students really enjoyed these games!
